Deftones fans have been waiting for a new album since Ohms dropped in 2020, and according to Chino Moreno, they won’t be waiting much longer.
In a recent interview, Moreno said the band is “getting very close” to having new music ready, adding that the plan is to release it sometime around their upcoming tour. The interview was recorded in December, so things could be even further along by now—but with Deftones now kicking off a North American run with The Mars Voltaand no official announcement yet, a mid-to-late 2025 release seems more likely.
Speaking to Billboard Español, Moreno hinted at the timing: “So the plan is, obviously, to have a record sometime around that time [during the tour]. It’s getting very close to being ready, so yeah, we’re excited.”
If that timeline holds, fans might not have to wait long to hear what the band has been working on. With Deftones’ history of slipping new material into setlist’s before official releases, there’s a good chance something could debut on this tour.
Aside from the Mars Volta dates, Deftones have a few massive shows lined up later this year, including two stadium gigs with System of a Down in September and their annual Día de los Deftones festival, which typically lands in early November in San Diego. Moreno also teased the idea of bringing the festival to Mexico at some point. “We talked about it a lot recently, so it’s definitely in discussions to do so” he said of the tentative plans. “But we would love to do it.”
Right now though the focus is on the tour, but with Moreno talking this openly about new music, an official announcement can’t be far off. Whether it drops mid-tour or later in the year, Deftones fans have something big to look forward to.
