George Clinton is heading back Down Under this spring, bringing the almighty Parliament-Funkadelic with him for a run of East Coast shows this September.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, now five decades deep into his reign, shows no signs of slowing down. From the molten soul of early Parliament to the psych-drenched chaos of Funkadelic, Clinton truly warped the shape of funk into something entirely his own. Think Motown grit fused with Hendrix guitar work and the wild abandon of Sly Stone.
Together with P-Funk, Clinton carved out a new musical movement. Tracks like ‘Flash Light’, ‘Aqua Boogie’ and ‘(Not Just) Knee Deep’ became iconic hits. In fact, across the ’70s alone, Parliament and Funkadelic combined for 39 charting singles and seven gold or platinum records. It’s not bad for what many first dismissed as “just a party band.”
Clinton was always one step ahead. As hip hop exploded in the ’90s, producers dug deep into his catalogue. West Coast giants like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube built empires on his grooves. Today, you can trace Clinton’s DNA through artists like Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, Childish Gambino and more.
Now 82, Clinton remains a relentless performer. His stage shows with Parliament-Funkadelic are part gig, part psychedelic sermon. “Aussies know what it means to have a good time,” he said. “Come on out and get funked up!”
Clinton and P-Funk hit the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney this September. Expect three hours of cosmic chaos, deep grooves, and a celebration of one of music’s most unique legacies.
The pre-sale begins on Tuesday, April 1 at 9:00am local time. The general on- sale begins Thursday, April 3 at 9:00am local time. Tickets can be purchased here.
