Green Day Spoof Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Boogie Nights’ in Awards Speech

In a rather hilarious turn of events, Green Day turned their iHeartRadio Music Awards acceptance speech into a Boogie Nights tribute.

The legendary punk trio, namely: Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool picked up the award for Alternative Artist of the Year. In doing so, they beat out Cage The Elephant, Linkin Park, Sum 41, and Twenty One Pilots. But instead of your standard ‘thank you’ speech, Armstrong went full Mark Wahlberg and quoted the infamous awards scene from Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 cult classic.

“Wow. I don’t know what to say,” Armstrong began, channelling Wahlberg’s character, Dirk Diggler. “I guess the only thing I can say is, I’ll keep rocking and rolling to keep making music and better songs.”

Behind him, Dirnt and Tré Cool started cracking up. In fact, they could barely hold it together as Armstrong continued to deadpan his way through the entire speech. “You know, it seems we make these records and sometimes they’re considered filthy by some people. But I don’t think that’s true. This music we make can make people feel better. They can help, they really can, and I really believe that.”

If anyone in the crowd missed the reference, Green Day made sure to hammer it home later on Instagram. They posted their speech side-by-side with Wahlberg’s original moment from Boogie Nights.

It’s classic Green Day. Blurring the line between self-deprecating humour and genuine sentiment. Plus, at this point Green Day have either won or been nominated for every award in the book, so why not have some fun with it?

Beyond their awards show antics, Green Day have a packed year ahead. They recently returned home after after a run of stadium shows in Australia. They’re also set to headline Download Festival 2025 alongside Sleep Token and Korn. The band are also producing New Years Rev, a new comedy film inspired by their early years, currently in production in Oklahoma.
