Iron Maiden has named Simon Dawson as their new touring drummer, replacing Nicko McBrain. After 42 years, McBrain is stepping away from touring, playing his final show in São Paulo on December 7.
Dawson is no stranger to Maiden’s world. He has been Steve Harris’ drummer in British Lion for over a decade. His drumming features on both British Lion albums, including 2020’s The Burning. Maiden’s statement praised Dawson’s talent and long-standing chemistry with Harris.
“As The Future Past Tour concludes after 81 shows, Iron Maiden are delighted to announce Simon Dawson,” the band shared. “Simon first teamed up with Steve Harris back in 2012. He has since become an invaluable collaborator.”
Dawson’s addition comes as Maiden prepare to celebrate their 50th anniversary with the Run for Your Lives tour. The tour kicks off on May 27, 2025, in Budapest, featuring songs from their first nine albums. It promises to be a nostalgic experience for fans, filled with classics and deep cuts alike.
McBrain, while retiring from touring, is not leaving the Maiden family entirely. During the São Paulo show, Bruce Dickinson paid tribute to McBrain’s legacy. He called for the night to be a celebration of McBrain’s career and confirmed his ongoing connection to the band.
