King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Play Three Shows In A Lithuanian Prison

Share

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard transformed a former prison in Vilnius into a psychedelic party during a three-night residency, ahead of their return to Australia this December.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard just wrapped a three-night residency at Lukiškių kalėjimas 2.0, a former prison turned music venue in Vilnius, Lithuania. Running from May 29 to 31, the shows were chaotic, energetic and full of surprises, even by King Gizz standards.

Captured by Bootleg Gila on YouTube and countless fans in the crowd, the final night featured a standout moment when a punter named Ignas held up a sign that read, “Can I play ‘Dragon’ on Stu’s guitar please”.

Frontman Stu Mackenzie handed over the guitar without hesitation and dove into the crowd, while Ignas jumped in and took on guitar duties. Mackenzie eventually returned to belt out the rest of the track, one of the band’s heavier metal-leaning cuts.

One fan on Instagram captured the scene perfectly: “The building looks like a Mortal Kombat background, cool as fuck.” The prison courtyard venue, lit with haze and flooded with movement, hosted the kind of immersive chaos that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have long made their calling card.

The mosh pits didn’t stop for three days. Every riff seemed to lift the crowd higher. It’s the kind of live experience that’s impossible to fake – loose but tight, unpredictable but entirely intentional.

The band is touring in support of their 27th album, Phantom Island, which lands Friday, 13 June via their own label, p(doom) records.

Australian fans won’t have to wait long to catch the band live. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return home in December for a run of shows along the East Coast, including orchestral performances and rock gigs.

They’ll perform with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Opera House, with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at Brisbane’s Princess Theatre, and with Orchestra Victoria at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. They’re also locked in for a rock show at the Bowl, Enmore Theatre, and Fortitude Music Hall.

While Aussies might not get a full-blown prison show like Lithuania did, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard never disappoint live, so this isn’t one to miss.
