Evanescence have emerged from the shadows with a new single titled ‘Afterlife’, written for Netflix’s upcoming Devil May Cry animated series.
The song marks the band’s first recorded output since 2021’s The Bitter Truth. Hitting with the same kind of cinematic weight you would expect, it’s touches all hallmarks of what an Evanescence track should be.
It opens with Amy Lee’s trademark tension: hushed vocals, looming synths, and a slow burn that spirals into full-blown melodrama. “Hide before the floodgates open,” she sings, before launching into a chorus that’s all fire and fury: “Damned to finally meet you in the afterlife.”
Co-written with Alex Seaver (Mako) and produced by Seaver alongside longtime collaborator Nick Raskulinecz, the song feels engineered for maximum impact. It’s heaving guitars, soaring vocals, apocalyptic themes—but it’s all been sharpened with a modern, orchestral touch that suits the Devil May Cry universe.
An alternate version of ‘Afterlife’ will appear throughout the series when it premieres April 3. The lyric video, stacked with visuals from the show, dropped alongside the single and serves as a teaser for the chaos to come.
Evanescence are also deep into work on their next album, though no release date’s been set. In a recent interview, Lee said the band were “happily, deeply in the creative process” and described the Devil May Cry cut as a fun way to dip back into recording mode.
“It’s our first time back in the studio since The Bitter Truth,” she said. “Super fun, super grateful for the opportunity.”
The band are also gearing up to support My Chemical Romance, Metallica and Halsey later this year, with a stop locked in for Louder Than Life Festival in September.
So while ‘Afterlife’ does not reinvent the wheel, but it’s a solid reminder that Evanescence still thrive in the dark, theatrical corners of heavy music. Particularly when demons are involved.
