Machine Head Surprise-Release New Single ‘Sutures’

Share

Machine Head have surprise-released ‘Sutures’ after Robb Flynn confirmed the end of the band’s UNATØNED album cycle.

The new track landed on 20 October through Nuclear Blast, with an official audio upload available now. It was co-produced by Flynn and Zack Ohren, continuing the partnership behind the band’s most recent album.

The recording features Flynn on vocals and guitar, Jared MacEachern on bass and Matt Alston on drums. Flynn and MacEachern share the songwriting credits. Ohren and Olav Tabatabai handled engineering, with Julian Gargiulo mixing and Seth Munson mastering the single.

Machine Head’s announcement names the new single without announcing an album. No new album title or release date has been attached to ‘Sutures’, and the band have not said whether it will appear on a future full-length.

Robb Flynn Reflects On The UNATØNED Cycle

In a 10 October blog post, Flynn looked back over roughly 18 months of promotion and touring, describing repeated crew and lineup changes alongside bereavements, travel problems and sharply varying turnouts at shows.

He counted seven guitar players during that period, three of whom never reached the stage. Machine Head also played seven shows as a trio, including festival appearances and three-hour ‘Evening With’ sets.

Flynn identified himself, MacEachern and Alston as the three consistent band members throughout the cycle. He thanked Reece Scruggs, Wacław ‘Vogg’ Kiełtyka and Ben Eller for their contributions, along with Ohren, the road crew and the fans.

The band would now take time off with their families, Flynn said. On what follows, he wrote: “We’ll figure out the future. But that’s for another day.”

UNATØNED arrived on 25 April 2025 as Machine Head’s eleventh studio album, following 2022’s ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN. Its 12-song tracklist includes ‘UNBØUND’, ‘ØUTSIDER’, ‘BØNESCRAPER’ and ‘SCØRN’; ‘Sutures’ is a separate addition to that catalogue.

The album was recorded between July 2023 and December 2024 at Robb’s Jam Room, Sharkbite Studios and Drop Of Sun Recording. Flynn and Ohren shared production duties there too, with Ohren also engineering the sessions.
