President have revealed their member’s aliases and discuss masks, faith, and their upcoming EP in a new interview.
The mystery around masked newcomers President has started to clear, thanks to a new interview that finally revealed what the members call themselves.
The band first appeared earlier this year with the release of their debut single ‘In the Name of the Father,’ followed by ‘Fearless’ and ‘Rage.’ Alongside the songs, they made their live debut at Download Festival, quickly drawing attention and comparisons to fellow masked act Sleep Token. Fan speculation about who was behind the masks ran wild, with some guessing it might be Chino Moreno of Deftones or Charlie Simpson of Busted and Fightstar.
Now, in conversation with Metal Hammer, President confirmed the stage names of the musicians. The group’s frontman goes by President, joined by guitarist Heist, bassist Protest, and drummer Vice. While those names are now public, the actual identities of the members remain off-limits. “We’re never going to discuss or acknowledge our identities,” the vocalist said.
The masks are not just a visual gimmick, according to the band. President explained that the project grew out of leaving a religious upbringing behind and wrestling with questions of faith and meaning. “When you’re institutionalized into something and you eventually get out of it, you end up wondering, ‘How much of this is what I think, and how much is what I was told to think?’ President is the perfect way for me to explore these feelings and not have it feel like ‘me’ who has the spotlight on them.”
While their music incorporates religious imagery, the frontman clarified it isn’t anti-religion. Instead, it’s an attempt to find “higher meaning.” The upcoming EP King of Terrors, out September 26, continues those themes. “My uncle passed away a few years ago, and that was the first time I’d had someone die who was close to me when I wasn’t part of this religious thinking. It hit me really hard. So King of Terrors sums up the journey I’ve been on,” he explained.
President have already played a run of shows this year and will hit Australia alongside Architects in December. With growing momentum and their first EP on the way, the band’s rise looks far from slowing down.
