It’s been years since Guns N’ Roses launched their blockbuster reunion tour, but for former drummer Matt Sorum, the sting of being left out took some time to fade. Sitting down on the LEGENDS podcast by All Day Vinyl, Sorum opened up about the experience and how he’s come to terms with it.
“They invited me to come play [as a guest], and I declined,” Sorum boldly admitted, as reported by Blabbermouth. “I didn’t think it made sense to go play two songs and then do what? I play music with musicians.”
It’s a blunt answer, but Sorum does not sound bitter. These days, he’s carving out his own path, embracing what he calls the “vagabond dream” of being a musical journeyman. “I kind of like where I’m at, as far as taking twists and turns,” he added.
That doesn’t mean the exclusion didn’t hit hard at first. “I’ll be honest, in the beginning, it was a little weird,” he said. “I’m, like, ‘Okay, well, it’s a reunion. Okay, well, make it a reunion.’ But it didn’t go that way. So, I’m much more at peace with it than I was in the very beginning.”
If that sounds relatable, you’re not alone—Ringo Starr of all people gave Sorum a call about it. “Ringo [Starr] called me and actually talked to me about it,” Sorum revealed. “He said, ‘You didn’t get invited to the party.’ I said, ‘No, I didn’t get invited to the party.’”
The Beatle shared a story about John Lennon and Paul McCartney that left Sorum stunned. “I’m, like, ‘Is he actually talking about John Lennon? This is crazy.’ That right there told me the universe is on my side. I’m on the phone with Ringo Starr, talking about not being invited to the party. That’s insane.”
It’s a rock ‘n’ roll twist that feels oddly perfect. For Sorum, the reunion might not have panned out, but the universe had something else up its sleeve. It would seem it does all work out in the end.
