As AC/DC tour rumours heat up, Melbourne could see a recreation the band’s legendary Swanston Street video for its 50th anniversary.
As rumours continue to build around an upcoming AC/DC Australian tour, Melbourne Town Hall is looking to take things a step further, by pushing to bring the band back to Swanston Street to recreate one of the most iconic moments in Australian music history.
As reported by The Herald Sun, talks are underway within Town Hall to mark the 50th anniversary of AC/DC’s legendary ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll)’ music video, filmed in 1976 on a flat-bed truck moving through Melbourne’s CBD.
The clip has become one of the most recognisable in Australian rock culture, and with the anniversary landing in early 2026, the council is planning to commemorate it – with or without the band.
Lord Mayor Nick Reece told The Herald Sun that a range of tribute events are being discussed, including local acts performing AC/DC classics and a possible week of celebrations in the newly reopened City Square. Reece said “recreating that iconic moment on Swanston St would be unforgettable”.
“From that flat-bed stage, the band took on the world – and to this day, remain the most influential Aussie rock band of all time,” Reece said. “Next year marks the 50th anniversary and I’d love to see the city painted black and the volume turned up to 11.”
While the council is hopeful that AC/DC could be involved in recreating the Swanston Street scene, it’s important to note that nothing has been confirmed at this stage. A senior Town Hall source told The Herald Sun, “If we got AC/DC on a flat-bed truck going down Swanston St, it would be absolutely incredible.”
The timing of the push coincides with mounting speculation that AC/DC will announce their first Australian tour since 2015. We reported earlier this week that insiders expect the band to perform at the MCG in November as part of their Power Up world tour.
Promoter Christo Van Egmond of TEG Van Egmond told The Herald Sun that “nothing is confirmed at this stage,” though multiple reports point to an announcement being close.
Meanwhile, 9News has reported that AC/DC are expected to headline on the Sunday of the bp Adelaide Grand Final in November, further fuelling the speculation that a full-blown national tour is on the horizon.
Production designer for the Power Up tour Terry Cook said the new shows are built around maximising fan connection. “AC/DC planned their show with a focus on fan interaction, creativity and pushing boundaries,” he said. With extended runways, lighting effects and plenty of firepower, Cook said the show is “bright, loud and full of energy.”
With the 50th anniversary of ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top’, potential MCG stadium shows, and a possible recreation of their iconic Swanston St jaunt, this next chapter of AC/DC could be one for the history books. And if the rumours are true, it might just be their last lap around Australia.
