Disturbed drummer Mike Wengren says the band are working on new music and hoping for a 2027 release, ahead of bringing The Sickness and a greatest hits set to Australia and New Zealand.
We caught up with Wengren earlier today who confirmed that work is underway, with the band preparing to get together again to check over the material.
“We are working on the music as we speak, yes, sir.”
While a release next year is the aim, he stopped short of promising a date.
“I’m not able to give any major updates. I know that we’re getting together actually next week the band is getting together again.”
There’s plenty of older material keeping him occupied, too. Disturbed’s Australian and New Zealand shows will open with The Sickness performed in full, followed by an intermission and a greatest hits set.
For Wengren, that means getting back behind the kit for songs that rarely find their way into a regular show. With albums and singles competing for space, playing the entire debut gives those tracks room in the set again.
He remembers touring the record for more than two years after its release, when the band had just one album to draw from. Revisiting those songs has been inspiring, bringing back memories of the early days while giving fans the full record onstage.
Mike Wengren (Disturbed) interview
That fondness for the past comes through elsewhere in the conversation. Before getting into tour plans, Wengren takes us around his Star Wars collection, showing off a life-size Boba Fett and a Han Solo in carbonite table.
Having spent Halloween dressed as the Mandalorian, he’s also enjoying sharing the films and shows with his children, getting to experience that excitement with them.
Elsewhere, he talks Australian vineyard visits, owning a brewery and hearing Disturbed in very different settings. Sports arenas are one thing; an instrumental version of ‘The Sound Of Silence’ playing in an elevator is another.
Naturally, I had to ask whether the elevator version earns him royalties.
“You know, I’m not sure about that. I’m gonna have to ask my attorney when we get off this call.”
