Powderfinger are open to playing the 2027 NRL Grand Final, with Bernard Fanning inviting the league to get in touch during a radio interview.
As Rolling Stone Australia reports, Triple M Breakfast host Aaron Woods raised the idea on Monday, 19 October. Powderfinger’s Sydney shows on 1 and 2 October sit just before the Grand Final on 3 October.
“Sure, give us a call, V’landys,” Fanning replied.
Co-host Beau Ryan then asked whether the gap also reflected hopes that the Brisbane Broncos would make the game. Fanning had a simpler explanation: “It’s because we want to watch it.”
The exchange left an invitation open, without an announcement of a booking or confirmation of negotiations with the NRL.
Their Australian reunion tour is already confirmed from September to November 2027, taking in Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. The band will play under a travelling big top, with Sydney’s shows taking place at The Domain.
The setup includes standing and seated tickets, plus food and drink offerings around the concert site. Powderfinger are also putting together an Australian support lineup, with different emerging and established acts joining them across the tour. The support announcement is due in November.
It will be their first national tour since the 2010 farewell. Fanning, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, Jon Coghill and John Collins are returning with a catalogue spanning seven studio albums, including songs such as ‘My Happiness’, ‘These Days’ and ‘On My Mind’.
There have been occasional appearances in the intervening years. ABC’s account of the reunion notes that four members played together at Splendour In The Grass in 2017, followed by a virtual performance in 2020 that raised money for Support Act and Beyond Blue.
The tour will also raise funds and awareness for Mission Australia, with more details of the partnership to follow.
General ticket sales for the 2027 tour opened on 19 October, with times staggered by city. The band’s official website has dates and ticket links.
