Primus is looking for a new drummer following Tim “Herb” Alexander’s sudden exit last month. The American band posted a call on social media, asking for applications from “all points in the universe” for the role of drummer/percussionist.
They’re seeking someone with an “original sensibility and aesthetic” who can bring groove, pocket, and musical chemistry to the band. “Flashy chops are wonderful, but the ability to listen and contribute is a must,” they wrote. Applicants should send a resume and video performance to [email protected].
The band, consisting of bassist/vocalist Les Claypool and guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde, plans to continue their upcoming Sessanta V2.0 tour with a series of substitutes behind the kit. This six-week run, alongside A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, kicks off in 2025. Until then, Claypool’s Holy Mackerel and Fearless Flying Frog Brigade bandmates will fill in for Alexander during their two-night New Year’s celebration in Oakland, CA. Tool’s Danny Carey will also step in for Primus’ performance at Tool Live in the Sand in March 2025.
Alexander explained his departure to Rolling Stone, saying it was due to health concerns. “My body hurts constantly,” he said. “I want to give my family the presence they deserve.” He also mentioned that years of touring left him “empty” and that he wasn’t able to continue in a balanced band relationship.
Although an open call for a band member is rare, it’s not unheard of. Earlier this year, The Smashing Pumpkins also held a public search for a new guitarist. After a laborious recruitment process, the iconic rockers eventually hired Kiki Wong. So, if you think you’ve got what it takes to join Primus, now is the time to apply. This is the kind of opportunity many simply conjure in their wildest dreams, so do not hesitate. Put your drums sticks in hand and get practicing!
