Everyone loves a good multi-part rock experience – Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘I Won’t See You Tonight’ Parts 1 & 2 come to mind, as does Metallica’s epic ‘The Unforgiven’ trilogy. But little did we know, there was another extended sonic universe out there, one that’s perhaps more spiritual than literal – though no less valid, and one that has now come to its conclusion. With their new single ‘Seize And Destroy’, Private Function have completed the ‘Destroy’ series.
“As a teenager I found it weird that The Stooges had a song called ‘Search and Destroy’, and Metallica have a song called ‘Seek and Destroy’, so I wrote part three, ‘Seize and Destroy’, which marks the finale of those two songs,” Chris Penney, Private Function songwriter and vocalist, says of it all.
“The lyrics to ‘Seize and Destroy’ are just the lyrics to ‘Search And Destroy’ by The Stooges and ‘Seek And Destroy’ by Metallica jumbled up. But then we added “acid rain” to the lyrics, because any hardcore song that doesn’t mention acid rain sucks.”
Every bit brilliant as it is earth-shaking, ‘Seize And Destroy’ is a break-neck journey through many of the reasons why Private Function are so quickly winning over hearts and minds, while putting forward some entirely new ones. Driving bass, juicy chug, relentless beats and mind-bending solos, the band are making a very clear point that there’s nothing they can’t do. With the chops to carry their brand of heavy, hard rock and the brains to wield it in their own unique way, it’s no surprise fans are waiting with such anticipation for their forthcoming full-length record, expected 2023.
We’d be remiss to not mention the cinematic masterpiece alongside which the track comes, featuring beloved childhood figures Bananas In Pajamas more murderous than maybe we’ve ever seen them before. Private Function will be wrapping the year in style, on the road – details below.
