Resolve Confront Sleep Paralysis On ‘Mind Awake, Body Asleep’

Share

Resolve have released ‘Mind Awake, Body Asleep’, drawing on vocalist Anthony Diliberto’s experiences of sleep paralysis ahead of their third album, Spread My Ashes Into Space.

Lyon quartet Resolve‘s new track is the third single from the record, which arrives on Friday, January 15th, 2027 via Arising Empire. Its lyrics draw on experiences Diliberto has become better at recognising, though that familiarity hasn’t made his nights straightforward.

“Mind Awake, Body Asleep is about sleep paralysis, something that has deeply affected my nights for several years. I experienced one particularly intense episode a few years ago, and while I’m now better at recognizing what is happening, the line between sleep paralysis, nightmares and reality can still become difficult to distinguish.”

Diliberto says he has also developed a reflex that wakes him just as he begins falling asleep, alongside a sense of paranoia that builds as the night goes on. There’s an unexpected distinction between life at home and time spent touring, too.

“Strangely, these episodes happen almost exclusively when I’m at home, and very rarely when I’m away or on tour.”

The Mr. Robot Connection

The title draws on Mr. Robot, specifically the idea of Elliot’s second personality taking over at night while he believes he is asleep. Diliberto’s lyrics also explore how people interpreted sleep paralysis before there was a medical explanation, with the song’s progression intended to reflect his own experience.

“I feel like the song naturally evolves into something increasingly oppressive, and captures quite accurately what it feels like to be fully conscious while trapped inside your own body, at the mercy of what your mind is making you experience.”

For Diliberto, understanding the mechanisms behind those episodes hasn’t made them feel any less real. He leaves that tension unresolved in his explanation of the song, interested in the unsettling space between what he knows is happening and what he experiences.

Mind Awake, Body Asleep offers another piece of an album that looks beyond Earth for inspiration and escape. Spread My Ashes Into Space is out January 15th through Arising Empire, with pre-orders available now.
