Longtime Godsmack members Shannon Larkin and Tony Rombola have officially left the band.
The drummer and guitarist—key players in the band’s lineup for over two decades—stepped away quietly in 2024, but only now has Larkin confirmed the split publicly. The news follows Godsmack’s current European run with fill-ins Will Hunt (Evanescence) on drums and Sam Bam Koltun (Dorothy) on guitar.
Speaking in a since deleted video posted this week, Larkin said: “We did quit the band last year after lots of talking to Sully and Robbie. They understood that we didn’t want to tour anymore. That’s the reason.”
He made it clear there’s no drama behind the move. “It wasn’t a bad thing,” he added. “We’re brothers for life with Sully and Robby. We wish Will and Sam all the best. All the fans, keep going – they’re kicking ass.”
Larkin and Rombola had been with Godsmack for 28 years and 21 years respectively. Now both in their late 50s and early 60s, they’ve simply decided they’ve had enough of the road. “We just want to be home with everything that we love,” Larkin said. “Forty years I’ve been touring.”
Frontman Sully Erna had previously called questions about their status a “tricky” topic, only mentioning that the pair had “personal things” going on. The band hasn’t yet issued an official statement on their departure, but Larkin’s update leaves little room for speculation.
Importantly, Larkin also confirmed that he and Rombola are already working on new music together. No word yet on what form that’ll take, but it sounds like this isn’t a retirement. It’s just a reset.
As for Godsmack, Erna and bassist Robbie Merrill are continuing on with a fresh lineup, treating it as a new chapter rather than a full stop.
No farewell tours, no press circus. It’s just a quiet exit, handled with respect. In a scene that thrives on chaos, that’s actually a rare thing.
