Shihad Call It Quits After Nearly 40 Years: One Last Australian Tour

Share

After almost 40 years, New Zealand rock legends Shihad are calling it quits. The band has just announced a final Australian tour in early 2025, where they’ll play five cities before bowing out for good.

Formed in 1988, Shihad became one of New Zealand’s most iconic rock bands. From their thrash beginnings to stadium-ready anthems, they’ve been a major force in the Antipodean rock scene. Their 2001 album The General Electric solidified their place in rock history, featuring hits like “My Mind’s Sedate” and “Pacifier.”

The band, comprised of Jon Toogood, Karl Kippenberger, Phil Knight, and Tom Larkin— have recently made the tough decision to say goodbye. In a statement, drummer Tom Larkin explained the decision to break up: “The fundamental chemistry that makes Shihad work requires certain things to be in place. When those things can’t be sustained, it takes away from what makes the band special.”

Their last album, Old Gods (2021), was a testament to their enduring power. At 50, frontman Jon Toogood said of the record, “We shouldn’t actually be making a rock n roll record this good.” And yet, they did, with defiant tracks that tackled both social and racial injustice.

The band’s farewell tour will be a celebration of their legacy, with a no-holds-barred set of hits and deep cuts. “We need to pay homage to this band,” Toogood said. “We’re gonna fucking hit it!”

The tour kicks off on 13 February in Adelaide and wraps up on 7 March in Melbourne. Joining them on the road will be rockers Battlesnake and, in Melbourne, punk legends Bodyjar. If you’re a fan, don’t miss this final chance to see Shihad live.
