The Amity Affliction Pay Tribute to Turnstile in Their Debut Like A Version Performance

Share

The Amity Affliction have made their Like A Version debut with a blistering cover of Turnstile’s ‘HOLIDAY’, complete with synths and strings. It’s a heavy nod to their hardcore roots.

Fresh off the release of their emotionally loaded new single ‘All That I Remember’, The Amity Affliction have kept the momentum going with their debut appearance on triple j’s Like A Version this morning.

The Queensland metalcore mainstays took on ‘HOLIDAY’ by Baltimore’s Turnstile, putting their own dramatic twist on the modern hardcore anthem.

Rather than replicate the original note-for-note, The Amity Affliction made the track unmistakably theirs. With layered synths and a surprisingly fierce string section in the mix, the band blended their signature emotional weight with the infectious energy of Turnstile’s East Coast punk sound.

“Back in hardcore, you would cover your friends’ bands,” said guitarist Dan Brown. “That was quite normal to be like ‘oh, this other band from our hometown play this song and we like it too, so we’re gonna play it too.’ Bands would almost share songs. Hopefully [Turnstile] see it like that.”

The performance felt like a full-circle moment for a group with a past in the DIY hardcore circuit, now tipping their hats to a peer that’s helping carry heavy music into the mainstream.

Drummer Joe Longobardi noted the wider impact of bands like Turnstile breaking through. “There’s so many gifted, talented musicians in punk bands, in hardcore bands, in metal bands,” he said. “And I think they’ve all paid their dues and it’s nice to see the gratification from the outside world recognising, on a broader scale, the talent involved.”

It’s the latest move in what’s shaping up to be a big year for The Amity Affliction. Just yesterday, they dropped ‘All That I Remember’, their first new track since the departure of longtime member Ahren Stringer. The track introduced new clean vocalist Jonny Reeves and offered a raw, deeply personal dive into frontman Joel Birch’s relationship with his late mother.

Between a massive North American tour and a slot on Parkway Drive’s 20th anniversary European run, The Amity Affliction is clearly entering a new chapter. If today’s Like A Version is anything to go by, they’re charging into it with purpose a healthy dose of hardcore pride.
