US band The Brother Brothers have turned to their fans for help after singer David Moss nearly drowned off the Australian coast and ended up in hospital with a brain cyst and lung clots.
The twins, David and Adam Moss, were midway through their Aussie tour when things took a serious turn. David reportedly passed out in the ocean earlier this month, prompting a helicopter rescue and three-week hospital stay. The band scrapped the rest of their tour dates and set up a GoFundMe to cover medical costs. Within 24 hours, their fans had chipped in over $50,000.
In an Instagram post featuring photos of David laid up in an Australian hospital, the band thanked their community and shared the brutal reality of what they’d been through. “If you don’t have community to lean on, what do you have?” they wrote.
David was diagnosed with a large benign cyst in his brain and two blood clots in his lungs—about as far from ideal as you can get while on tour. Between the medical bills and the lost income from cancelled shows, the financial hit was rough. The band said the support they’ve received was “deeply moving” and added that recovery is still going to be a long road.
The Moss brothers had been booked for a string of regional folk festivals, including Port Fairy, Yackandandah, and Blue Mountains. The cancellation announcement was blunt and honest: “David passed out in the water and nearly drowned.” No fluff.
They also gave a shoutout to the Australian healthcare system, calling it “a shining beacon to be admired.” Which is about as glowing a review as you’ll ever hear from a musician who’s been airlifted out of the ocean.
Fans have since flooded the comments with support. One called David a “fantastic musician, even better person.” Another just said, “We’re here for you.” In the meantime, we wish David all the best with a speedy recovery.
