So, Robert Smith might be giving us a Christmas single. Yes, you did read that correctly. The Cure’s frontman recently hinted he’s written “a really catchy pop song” that could work as a holiday release. In an interview with Radio X, Smith explained that the song had a vibe that could fit into the festive spirit, joking about slapping some Christmas lyrics on it.
“I always want an emotional response from what I write,” Smith said, adding that while it’s usually not about the catchiness, this one could be an exception. “I’ve written a really catchy pop song! I’m struggling to figure out how I’m gonna release it.”
And, honestly, after hearing Last Christmas blaring everywhere lately, maybe he’s onto something. Stick some jingle bells and festive words on it, and it could be the perfect, quirky addition to our recycled Christmas playlists.
But it’s not just about this one potential holiday jam. Smith also shared some big updates on new Cure material. The band’s last full-length, Songs of a Lost World, took over a decade to arrive, but Smith’s not making us wait that long for the next one. He’s already sitting on two more albums. One’s a “companion piece” to Songs of a Lost World, and the other is something very different—an experimental album with a “random” vibe. “It’s really kind of random stuff, like late-night studio stuff,” Smith explained. “Some of it is really good.”
Fans won’t have to wait long, either. Smith reassured listeners that the follow-up albums won’t take nearly as long as the last. “It’s pretty much ready to go,” he said. And if you’re wondering if the band’s still been working on new material for the last decade, well, yeah. Back in 2020, Smith revealed they had “two albums and an hour of noise” in the vault.
Looks like more Cure music is on the way. Christmas pop song or not, it’s safe to say we’ll be hearing a lot from Robert Smith soon. Although, I’m pining for the Christmas song.
