Tom Hamilton Hints at Aerosmith’s Future: “Maybe We’ll Do Something”

It would seem Aerosmith might not be completely done quite just yet. While Steven Tyler’s vocal injury forced the band to retire from touring, bassist Tom Hamilton isn’t ruling out future activity for the legendary rock act.

In a recent interview with Boston’s WBUR, Hamilton gave an update on Tyler’s recovery while also leaving the door slightly ajar for a potential Aerosmith reunion. “Steven’s healing process is going really, really well, but it goes at its own pace,” Hamilton shared. “Maybe Aerosmith will do something in the future, but it’s a big if.”

Hamilton made it clear that any future plans would all depend on Tyler’s readiness. “The last thing I want to do is push Steven in that direction,” he said. “If we do anything in the future, it would come from him.”

Aerosmith’s farewell tour came to an untimely halt in September 2023 when Tyler fractured his larynx just three shows into the run. The band had initially just postponed the tour, hoping to return in 2024. However, by August, they announced their retirement from the stage, citing Tyler’s struggles with his vocal recovery.

“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing,” the band said in a statement. “Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. Sadly, it’s clear that a full recovery isn’t possible. It was a heartbreaking decision, but necessary for all of us.”

Despite the announcement, Hamilton’s comments offer a glimmer of hope for fans who aren’t ready to say goodbye to the iconic band. While a full tour seems unlikely, the possibility of Aerosmith reuniting in some capacity still lingers.

In the meantime, Hamilton hasn’t slowed down. His new band, Close Enemies, recently signed with TLG|ROCK and kicked off a US tour last week. The winter trek wraps up with a January 29 show in St. Louis.

For Aerosmith fans, the thought of seeing the band together again—onstage or otherwise—feels like a dream clinging to. Whether it’s a one-off performance or something more, Hamilton’s optimism keeps the flame alive for the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers.

For now, all eyes remain on Steven Tyler’s recovery. As Hamilton said, “If it happens, it’ll happen when Steven’s ready.” And if Aerosmith has taught us anything over their many years of performing, it’s to never count them out.
