Tom Morello Brings Serj Tankian, Dave Grohl And More Onstage At Power To The People

Tom Morello’s Power to the People set didn’t stay a solo affair for long.

The Rage Against the Machine guitarist spent much of Saturday’s (October 3rd) performance at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland handing the stage over to a parade of guests, including Serj Tankian, Dave Grohl, Chuck D, B-Real, DMC, Scott Ian, Jack Black and Flavor Flav.

Before the guest list really opened up, Morello worked through “Soldier In The Army Of Love” and “Date Night”, brought grandson out for “Hold The Line”, then tore through a medley touching Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave staples (per The PRP).

Tankian was among the first major arrivals, joining Morello for their recent collaboration “Adjourn It” before taking over vocals on Audioslave’s “Like A Stone”, a song the pair have previously performed together live.

From there, Morello briefly revived another chapter of his career.

Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real joined him for “Prophets Of Rage”, bringing three members of the rap-rock supergroup back together onstage.

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels then appeared for RUN-D.M.C.’s “It’s Tricky”, before the guest list expanded considerably for “Walk This Way”. DMC, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, Chuck D, B-Real, Sen Dog and Jack Black all took part in the Aerosmith track famously reworked by RUN-D.M.C. in 1986.

Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power” followed with Flavor Flav joining Chuck D, B-Real, Sen Dog and DMC.

Morello still found room for his own history, tearing through a medley spanning Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave before returning to Rage for a full “Killing In The Name”.

And apparently there was still one guest left.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl emerged for the finale, joining Morello on a cover of KISS’ “Rock And Roll All Nite”.

Morello organised Power to the People as a one day festival bringing music and activism together, with the wider bill featuring Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, Brittany Howard and more.

We previously covered the festival’s free livestream, but Morello’s own set ended up providing its biggest concentration of crossovers, part reunion, part covers set and part rock and rap free for all.
