It would seem Tool‘s Maynard James Keenan is still not done surprising us. He is now adding another talent to the ever- growing list. The Tool frontman, winemaker, and Jiu Jitsu black belt is now releasing a new film. It’s titled The Great In Between: An Introduction to Jiu Jitsu and is basically Keenan’s attempt to get you on the mat.
Filmed at Verde Valley Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Cottonwood, Arizona, the seminar is designed for total beginners. Keenan, alongside other black belts, breaks down fundamental techniques for building strength, balance, and confidence. So don’t come into it expecting flying kicks—it’s all about developing a solid foundation for the sport first.
“You can do this,” says Keenan, with his trademark dry humour. “We’ve got your back. Not literally. But we can also teach you how to get us off your back.” It’s another facetious line from one of rock’s most interesting characters.
Directed by Chris Staab, the film features music from Puscifer, because really, it wouldn’t be a Keenan project without it. The 90-minute film begins streaming December 13th on Puscifer TV. You can pre-order the 72-hour rental now, with exclusive merchandise bundles also up for grabs. For deal hunters, Cyber Monday discounts are available with the code VVBJJ24.
Still not into grappling? That’s fine. Keenan also has other things going on too. The Sessanta tour, featuring A Perfect Circle, Primus, and Puscifer, returns in April. The “V.20” run promises another round of live shows.
Whether you’re curious about Jiu Jitsu or just here for Maynard’s unique antics, this film delivers. The Great In Between streams December 13th. Watch the trailer, then decide if you’re ready to step onto the mat. Who knows? By the end, you might actually learn to escape a choke—or at least laugh trying.
