There’s nothing quite like a Spacey Jane gig. From the moment they start playing, you instantly feel quite at home. A flood of nostalgia then hits you.
You recall their sweaty early- days gigs. Standing in intimate venues like Fremantle’s Mojo’s waiting for the long- haired rapscallions to emerge. You recall long road trips framed to the sounds of their first album Sunlight. You recall summer beers in the garage with your mates listening to “Feeding the Family.”
Spacey Jane were back tonight for their first performance in eighteen months. Performing in their hometown of Perth to an intimate crowd, the Fremantle band brought their rare brand of magic to the Rosemount Hotel. Delivering a set that felt both intimate yet huge, their setlist was packed with hits including “Lunchtime,” “Lots of Nothing” and of course, “Booster Seat.”
However, it was the debut of two unreleased tracks from their upcoming album that truly stole the night. One of them entitled ‘All the Noise’, struck that perfect balance between raw emotion and the jangly, driving sound that’s so uniquely Spacey Jane. The song has ‘future anthem’ written all over it. The second track, still unnamed, carried the same heartfelt weight, and you could feel the crowd locking into every note.
Lead singer Caleb Harper, as down-to-earth as they come, took a moment in- between songs to thank the packed room for their support. His Western Australian humility shone through as he chatted to the room like an old friend. Later on in the night he dropped a bombshell: the band will be hitting the road again in June. The room erupted. For anyone lucky enough to call Perth home, it’s the kind of news that hits close to the heart.
Not having played the Rosemount since 2019, the gig felt particularly special for both the band and those in attendance. It almost felt like stepping back in time to when Spacey Jane were just starting to catch fire in the local scene. But at the same time, it showcased how far they’ve come. The energy, the connection, the sense that something special is happening—they’ve held onto all of it.
Hearing those new tracks live, in a room full of people who get it, it felt like a sneak peek into the next chapter. Something I know I, along with many others, cannot wait for.
