Yellowcard Cancel Sydney Show After Ryan Key Loses Voice

Share

Yellowcard pulled the plug on their Sydney show at the Hordern Pavilion on April 9, just hours before doors were set to open.

The cancellation came after frontman Ryan Key announced he had lost his voice and was advised by a doctor not to perform. In a statement posted to social media, Key expressed regret over the last-minute call.

“Sydney, I know this is very last minute and it’s the most awful feeling to have to make this statement,” he wrote. “But I woke up today and my voice is completely gone. I saw the doc this afternoon and she advised me not to play the show tonight to prevent any further damage. I give you my word I’ve done everything possible to recover for tonight but I just couldn’t make it happen. We are working with the touring company to figure out rescheduling as soon as possible and will have more info soon.”

The show was set to be part of Yellowcard’s Australian run celebrating 20 years of their breakout album Ocean Avenue. Fans had travelled from across the country to see the Florida pop-punk outfit play their first Sydney set in years.

No replacement date has been confirmed yet, but the band’s team is working with the Australian promoter to reschedule. Ticketholders have been asked to hold on to their tickets while new arrangements are made.

It’s a tough blow for long-time fans who’ve waited more than a decade to hear tracks like ‘Only One’, ‘Way Away’, and the title track live again. But given the circumstances, many have shown support, flooding social media with well-wishes and hoping Key makes a full recovery.

Yellowcard’s remaining Australian tour dates have not been affected at the time of writing. Updates on the Sydney reschedule are expected in the coming days.
