A week after the sudden death of Atlanta rapper Young Scooter, the official cause has been confirmed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Scooter, whose real name was Kenneth Bailey died on March 28. He was fleeing from the police during a 911 call-out to a residence on William Nye Drive. The autopsy now confirms the cause of death as a “penetrating injury of the right thigh,” which resulted in fatal blood loss. The injury is believed to have been caused by wooden fencing or debris as he attempted to flee the scene. His death has been ruled an accident.
According to police reports, officers were responding to a 911 call involving “a dispute with a weapon” and reports of gunshots. When police arrived, a man briefly opened and then shut the door on officers. Shortly after, two males fled out the back of the home. One returned, but Bailey jumped two fences while running and suffered the fatal injury in the process.
Police made it clear that no shots were fired and no physical force was used by officers at the scene. “While we understand that many people are saddened by his passing, it is important to recognise that Atlanta police officers neither discharged their firearms nor used any force against Mr. Bailey,” a department statement read.
Young Scooter was 39. He rose to prominence in Atlanta’s mixtape circuit in the early 2010s. He eventually signed with Future’s Freebandz label and Waka Flocka Flame’s Brick Squad Monopoly. Scooter became known for his gritty street-focused lyrics and deep ties to Atlanta’s trap movement. He later collaborated with heavyweights like Future, Young Thug, Migos, and the late Juice WRLD.
One of his most notable appearances was on 2018’s ‘Jet Lag’ with Future and Juice WRLD. His death adds to a long list of Atlanta rap figures lost too soon. It also marks a tragic end to a voice that helped shape one of hip-hop’s most influential scenes.
