A House Of Dynamite Blows Up This Week’s Australian Streaming Charts

That’s a bad pun, but it’s a pretty decent thriller from Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Hurt Locker.

It’s a cliché, but I really do like Kathryn Bigelow’s old stuff better than her new stuff. Since the turn of the century (Jesus…) the Point Break director has fanged out heady drama after heady drama: The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Detroit, and now nuclear thriller A House Of Dynamite for Netflix, which is the number one streaming movie this week.

Don’t get me wrong, A House Of Dynamite is fine – you get Idris Elba as the POTUS, and that’s fun – but man, I don’t think we’re getting another Near Dark or Strange Days out of Bigelow any time soon. If it’s genre thrills you’re after, the excellent Weapons is sitting at #2, and we’ve got an unexpected appearance from the Stephen King obscurity Dolores Claiborne at #10. Or you could just watch Sinners again.

On the TV side of the ledger, Slow Horses continues to dominate, proving that a weekly release schedule beats the binge model as long as your show isn’t actively unwatchable – look how quickly Netflix‘s Boots vanished from sight. As a counterpoint, I’d say Task is charting well partly because all of the episodes are now streaming, which seems to argue against the weekly episode model, but I’m pretty confident strong word of mouth is keeping the series in the public eye – it’s really fantastic.
