Amon Amarth Return With New Single And Announce The Allfather Awakens

Share

Swedish Viking metal legends Amon Amarth have officially announced their 13th studio album, The Allfather Awakens, with the highly anticipated record arriving on October 2nd via Metal Blade Records.

Alongside the announcement, Amon Amarth have unleashed the album’s explosive opening track, “Gjallarhorn,” giving fans their first full taste of the record following the recent release of the acoustic piece “Upphaf.”

While that earlier track showcased a more restrained side of the band, “Gjallarhorn” is a return to the soaring melodies, riffs and choruses that have become synonymous with Amon Amarth’s sound.

Inspired by Norse mythology, the new single draws on the story of Odin sacrificing one of his eyes at the Well of Wisdom in exchange for divine knowledge, the accompanying music video (below) expands on that legendary tale, continuing the band’s long running fascination with Viking history and mythology.

A collection of epic stories

Rather than serving as a traditional concept album, The Allfather Awakens is described as a collection of epic stories centred on sacrifice, warfare, honour and the pursuit of wisdom. Odin once again remains the central figure throughout the album’s themes and artwork, tying together each tale without following a single narrative.

Instead of completing the writing process before entering the studio, Amon Amarth developed material while touring, recording one song at a time with longtime producer Jacob Hansen across multiple sessions in Denmark.

Guitarist Olavi Mikkonen explained that focusing on each track individually allowed the band to give every song the attention it deserved, while also opting for a more classic guitar tone by moving away from modern amplifiers in favour of Marshall stacks.

Featuring ten new tracks, The Allfather Awakens promises to continue Amon Amarth’s trademark fusion of crushing melodic death metal, cinematic storytelling and larger than life Viking imagery.
