Anne Hathaway takes vocals on a slinky dancefloor number for David Lowery’s music industry horror movie.

The horror of pop is a whole subgenre now. Smile 2, Vox Lux, and now Mother Mary are all exploring similar territory. You can draw a line all the way back to Brian De Palma’s 1974 Phantom Of The Paradise at least, if you like – it’s not necessarily a young subgenre, but we’ve definitely had an uptick in carefully shot, chilly examinations of the hell of celebrity.

And much like Naomi Scott did when she recorded Smile 2: The Skye Riley EP, Anne Hathaway is actually performing on the soundtrack for Mother Mary (Sia subbed in for Natalie Portman in Vox Lux, in case you were wondering).

That’s always a bit of a fraught prospect, when actors decide they want to belt out a few tunes – remember when Scarlett Johansson released an album of Tom Waits covers? But a) Hathaway has already proved she has musical chops in Les Miserables and whatnot, and b) this strikes me as a pretty tightly controlled project, with the likes of Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs on songwriting duties.

We’ve already heard the first track, “Burial,” written by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and George Daniel. Now comes “My Mouth Is Lonely For You”, penned by FKA Twigs, Koreless, Xquisite Korpse, Jeff Bhasker and Tobias Jesso, Jr.

Written and directed by David Lowery (The Old Man And The Gun, The Green Knight), Mother Mary sees Anne Hathaway as the titular pop icon and Michaela Coel as Sam Anselm, the fashion designer she betrayed years ago. When the pair reconnect when Hathaway’s Mary wants a dress for her upcoming tour, leading to all manner of psychosexual brinkswomanship and, judging by the trailer, bloody comeuppances.

The conceit of the soundtrack is that A24 Music is releasing it as Mother Mary: Greatest Hits, a seven track “compilation” that purports to draw from the fictional diva’s entire career – although at only seven songs, what does that say? The album is out on April 16, the same day the film hits cinemas. Check out the full track listing below.
