Anthrax Push Further Into Cursum Perficio With Crushing New Single ‘The Edge Of Perfection’

Share

Anthrax have unveiled another glimpse of what promises to be one of metal’s biggest releases of 2026, dropping The Edge Of Perfection, the second single from their long-awaited album Cursum Perficio.

Following Anthrax‘s politically charged It’s For The Kids, the latest track shifts gears while losing none of the intensity that has defined the New York thrash legends for more than four decades.

Opening with shimmering clean guitars before erupting into blast beats and razor sharp riffs, The Edge Of Perfection balances melody and aggression, with Joey Belladonna delivering one of the album’s most emotional vocal performances.

The accompanying music video is just as ambitious, directed by Academy Award winning special effects artist Joel Harlow (Star Trek, Alice in Wonderland), the cinematic clip blends fantasy, horror and live performance, featuring appearances from skateboarding icon Tony Hawk collaborator Wes Scarpias, actress Ashley Edner-Tancharoen, actor Troy James, legendary special effects pioneer Rick Baker, Rod Maxwell and Fedor Steer.

A career high

Scott Ian believes the song represents a career high:

“It’s the apex predator of Anthrax songs. I think it’s the best song we’ve ever written and the best thing I’ve ever been a part of creatively.”

Rather than focusing on anger alone, Ian said the song explores a much more personal theme:

“Love is perfection, and I like being on the edge of it. I don’t want everything to be about all of the same shit. This record has a whole bunch of love, a whole bunch of fun, and a little hate.”

Drummer Charlie Benante was equally confident in the track’s future, comparing the feeling he had while writing it to classic Anthrax staples:

“When I think about songs like ‘Only’ and ‘Indians,’ you know that you hit something and you can feel it. That’s the way I felt about ‘The Edge Of Perfection.'”

Scott Ian Interview

The new release follows It’s For The Kids, which Scott Ian previously told us was inspired by becoming a father and his frustration with the state of the world.

Speaking earlier this year, Ian described writing as a way of processing anger rather than letting it consume him, while telling Blunt during the band’s Australian tour that Anthrax have never been interested in becoming a legacy act content to simply relive the past.

That philosophy appears to run throughout Cursum Perficio, Arriving on September 18th, the record is Anthrax’s first studio album since 2016’s For All Kings and their first collection of new material in a decade.

Recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 and produced by Jay Ruston alongside the band, the album looks set to combine the classic thrash aggression fans expect with a broader emotional scope than ever before.
