BABYMETAL are stepping into the Marvel universe once again, this time appearing on their own limited edition variant cover for Marvel Zombies: War Zone #1.
The Japanese metal trio have teamed with Marvel for the new collectible, featuring artwork by acclaimed comic artist Phil Noto (per Lamb Goat).
Only 3,500 copies of the BABYMETAL variant are being produced, making this considerably more limited than your average merch table impulse purchase.
The cover is currently available to pre-order through the Capitol Records online store and hustl., with Japanese pre-orders set to open on September 7th. The standard edition of Marvel Zombies: War Zone #1 arrives in comic shops today, September 2nd.
BABYMETAL’s Marvel Connection Continues
It’s also not BABYMETAL’s first encounter with Marvel’s undead corner, earlier this year, BABYMETAL track ‘from me to u’ was used in a trailer for Marvel Television’s animated Disney+ series Marvel Zombies, providing a suitably frantic soundtrack for superheroes being ripped apart and reanimated.
‘from me to u’ originally appeared on the band’s fourth studio album, METAL FORTH.
Released last year, the record marked another major international breakthrough for BABYMETAL, reaching number nine on the Billboard 200. It also continued the band’s increasingly collaborative approach, with METAL FORTH bringing artists including Poppy, Spiritbox, Bloodywood, Electric Callboy, Polyphia and Slaughter to Prevail into BABYMETAL’s orbit.
The Marvel collaboration now pushes that crossover beyond simply supplying music for a trailer.
Having SU-METAL, MOAMETAL and MOMOMETAL immortalised on a Phil Noto cover feels strangely appropriate for a group whose entire career has existed somewhere between heavy music, elaborate visual storytelling and larger-than-life character building.
BABYMETAL aren’t exactly strangers to worlds outside traditional metal either, their ability to bounce between festival stages, pop culture collaborations and some of heavy music’s biggest contemporary names has become a fundamental part of what the band is.
Now they can add surviving a Marvel zombie apocalypse to the list.
BABYMETAL will return to the road this month for the next leg of their world tour, including a run of North American dates.
