Black Midi co-founder and guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died at the age of 26.

His family would share a statement last night (January 12) saying that the guitarist had died “after a long battle with his mental health. A talented musician and a kind, loving man finally succumbed; despite all efforts”.

“He will always be loved. Please take a moment to check in with your loved ones so we can stop this happening to our young men.”

Black Midi’s record label Rough Trade would extend their “deepest sympathy” to Kwasniewski-Kelvin’s family in their own statement, calling the artist “an incredibly talented person who will truly be missed.”

Kwasniewski-Kelvin formed the UK experimental rock band in 2017 alongside Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, and Morgan Simpson. The four-piece group would go on to release their debut album, Schlagenheim, in 2019, which would receive a Mercury Prize nomination and see them put on one of the most iconic performances ever to happen at the awards show.

In January 2021, Black Midi announced Kwasniewski-Kelvin’s departure from the band due to his struggles with mental health. While the former member wouldn’t record any material for their follow-up album, Calvalcade, Kwasniewski-Kelvin was credited as a songwriter on a number of tracks.

An outpouring of tributes for the late guitarist would spread across social media today from artists and fans alike. Fontaines D.C’s Connor Deegan III and Sleaford Mods’ Jason Williamson expressed their sympathies online over Instagram. BBC host and DJ Mary Anne Hobbs would write: “I’m so very sad and sorry to hear this tragic news… Rest in peace Matt, you beautiful genius.”
