Ex-Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert attempted murder charge just escalated in a way that could see the former hardcore staple spend the rest of his life behind bars.
33 year old ex-Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert has been indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury, with attempted first degree murder now added to the list of charges tied to a March 29th incident involving Brendan Yates’ father (per Loudwire).
Charge upgraded as case intensifies
According to reports out of Maryland, Ebert had initially been facing a second-degree murder charge, which carries a maximum 30 year sentence, the upgraded first degree charge raises the stakes significantly, with life imprisonment now on the table.
Police allege Ebert intentionally struck 79 year old William Yates with a vehicle following a dispute outside the family home, the incident reportedly left Yates with severe trauma to both legs.
Authorities claim Ebert had earlier arrived at the residence, shouting abuse and blaring his horn, before returning and hitting Yates in the driveway.
Turnstile break silence on former guitarist
In the aftermath, Turnstile issued a rare and heavy statement addressing Ebert’s history with the band:
“Turnstile cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community. After exhausting every available resource to support his access to help and recovery, a boundary ultimately had to be set when healthy communication was no longer possible and he began threatening violence.
In the years since, his baseless tirades have continued in public. We never addressed it. We chose to protect his privacy and the circumstances around his departure, even when he did nothing to be deserving of that protection. Over the past few months, his threats only escalated further.
This past week, that violence led to a physical attack when Brady went to the house of Brendan’s parents and used his vehicle to run over Brendan’s father, causing severe physical trauma. We are grateful that Mr. Yates survived, has successfully undergone surgery, and we’re hoping for the best possible outcome in his recovery.
We have no language left for Brady.
Please respect our privacy in this time.”
Additional charges and defence claim
Alongside the upgraded charge, Ebert is also facing attempted second degree murder, first degree assault, and two counts of second degree assault, he remains in custody without bail.
Ebert has pushed back on the allegations, claiming surveillance footage will clear him. “This is pure self-defense,” he said. “They’re the attackers.”
Police, however, allege he reversed his vehicle after an initial confrontation, then drove forward and struck Yates.
From hardcore architect to courtroom
Ebert was a founding member of Turnstile, serving as lead guitarist and backing vocalist from 2010 to 2022, his run included key releases like 2018’s ‘Time & Space’ and the Grammy nominated ‘Glow On’.
He is due back in court on Friday, May 8th for a scheduling conference, as a case that’s already rattled the hardcore scene continues to spiral.
