Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert has been ordered to undergo a competency evaluation as his attempted murder case continues, with Ebert maintaining that he ‘did not commit a crime’.
The latest development comes ahead of Ebert’s scheduled trial in Montgomery County, Maryland, where he is facing attempted first degree murder and attempted second degree murder charges stemming from an alleged incident involving Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates’ father, William Yates (per Loudersound).
According to The Baltimore Banner, Ebert’s attorney Mark Sobel raised ‘significant concerns regarding competency’ during a status hearing in Montgomery County Circuit Court. The court has now ordered an evaluation to determine whether Ebert is mentally competent to understand the proceedings and participate in his defence.
Ebert disputes those concerns, reportedly telling the court he is ‘perfectly competent’.
‘I did not commit a crime,’ Ebert said, while also claiming that ‘every part of the police report is a lie’.
Ebert threatens legal action
The former Turnstile guitarist has also indicated he intends to fire Sobel and pursue legal action against police, prosecutors and defence attorneys involved in the case.
It marks another sharp turn in proceedings that have been unfolding for months.
Authorities allege Ebert struck William Yates, then 79, with a vehicle outside the Yates family home in Silver Spring. William suffered significant injuries to his legs and underwent surgery following the incident.
Ebert has consistently denied criminal wrongdoing. Earlier this year, he described the incident as ‘pure self-defense’ and claimed he had been attacked.
A Montgomery County grand jury subsequently indicted Ebert on attempted first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, first degree assault and two counts of second degree assault.
Case continues following Turnstile split
Ebert was a founding member of Turnstile and played guitar with the Baltimore hardcore band from 2010 until the two parties separated in 2022.
Following his arrest, Turnstile publicly addressed their former guitarist, saying they had ‘cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community’.
Ebert had previously been scheduled to stand trial beginning Monday, October 5th. The competency evaluation now adds another significant legal step before the case can move forward.
