Christian Bale Weighs In On the American Psycho Remake

Share

Christian Bale, who played murderous Wall Street trader Patrick Bateman in 2000’s American Psycho, has nothing but encouragement.

Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel American Psycho is one of the most controversial books of all time. It got slapped with a R-rating in this country – copies on bookstore shelves are sold shrink-wrapped.

That didn’t stop it from getting a pretty great film adaptation in 2000, albeit one that severely tones down the novel’s graphic violence (to be fair, you’d have to). Directed by Mary Harron, the film put star Christian Bale well and truly on the map; although Bale had been around the traps for ages, starring in Steven Spielberg‘s Empire Of The Sun in 1987 at the age of 13, his turn as serial killing stockbroker Patrick Bateman really made people sit up and notice.

So, it’s natural that folks are curious about Bale’s take on director Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of Ellis’ novel. Very few details about the project have emerged, except that the script is by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, The Report), and everyone involved is adamant that it’s not a remake (yes, it is). We don’t even know who’ll be playing Bateman, although the smart money is on frequent Guadagnino collaborator Timothée Chalamet.

But Bale wishes whoever lands the role all the luck in the world. Pigeonholed on the red carpet by The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his latest film, The Bride!, Bale offered some words of encouragement.

“Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop,” he said. “I loved making it with [director] Mary Harron so many years back, fantastic memories of it all. Bold choice of anyone to try to do a… I don’t know if they’re doing a remake or what, I don’t know anything else about it. But all the best to ’em, I like brave people.”

Bless ‘im.
