Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has shared his dream that the thrash metal group’s final performance should take place in space: “I think that will be a really fitting climax.”
Metal pioneer Dave Mustaine has been out on the press circuit this past month, drawing up buzz for Megadeth‘s upcoming final self-titled album. Ahead of the release, Mustaine would reveal that not only would the band be releasing their final album, but would also embark on one final tour to close the book on the group’s immense legacy.
How long that final tour will last is anyone’s guess, as Mustaine said he could see himself touring for another five years.
Well, in a new interview with Metal Hammer, the metal legend would go on to talk about that elusive final show, revealing his ambitious vision for it.
“I hope we’ll be playing up in space. I think that will be a really fitting climax,” the guitarist said. “I’m not talking about on the side of a vomit comet. A gig on the moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool.”
The thrash metal musician would go on to say: “I saw they sent up a bunch of celebrities into space and I thought ‘Well, if them, why not me?’, you know? I’m just watching how that all progresses. I know Elon Musk and Richard Branson were working on interstellar travel. I think people are going to be travelling to space a lot sooner than you think.”
While it may seem like a joke, Mustaine would go on to double down on his statement, laying out a case for why he thinks it could be viable.
“People already travel over 40,000 feet altitude, and when you get to that kind of atmosphere, you’re basically already in space,” he argued. As Metal Hammer would point out, studies show outer space begins closer to 327,000 feet.
In August, Mustaine shared a press statement confirming the band’s final album and explained why he thinks now is the right time to throw in the towel.
“There are so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional. Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now,” Mustaine would share, announcing his intentions to embark on a farewell tour.
Reflecting on his career, the frontman would also go on to say: We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it’s played, and we changed the world. The bands I played in have influenced the world.”
Megadeth are set to kick off their global farewell tour in Peru in April, 2026 and will join Iron Maiden for their North America tour in August and September.
