David Bowie’s iconic track ‘Heroes’ has seen a major boost in streaming numbers after appearing in the Stranger Things final episode.

David Bowie’s beloved song ‘Heroes’ has seen a significant spike in streaming since its appearance in the final episode of Netflix’s sci-fi series Stranger Things.

According to Billboard, new Luminate data shows the song saw a nearly 500 per cent spike in streams after scoring the end credits of the series’ final episode.

Luminate’s data would also reveal that ‘Heroes’ had approximately 94,000 daily streams before the Stranger Things finale. That number would jump sharply since the episode dropped on New Year’s Day, reaching roughly 342,000 streams on January 1st, 456,000 on January 2 and 470,000 on January 3.

In an interview with Netflix’s outlet Tudum, series showrunners, the Duffer Brothers, revealed that Joe Kerry, who plays Steve Harrington in the show, suggested they use the iconic Bowie song to close out the show during its end credits.

“It was actually Joe Keery who suggested that we do the Bowie version,” Ross Duffer said. “Once Joe said that, we immediately knew that was the right song to end the show on because it is, in some ways, an anthem for Stranger Things. To use the original Bowie version just felt fitting for the conclusion.”

The Netflix series had previously used a cover of ‘Heroes’ performed by Peter Gabriel, making the use of the original a nostalgic nod to its earlier use.

Keery, who also fronts the music project Djo, has also received a significant boost in streaming numbers following the finale. His 2022 track ‘End of Beginning’ has climbed its way to Number 1 on Spotify’s Global Chart this week. According Rolling Stone, the song has gone on to displace Taylor Swift’s ‘The Fate of Ophelia’, which has held the top spot for several weeks.

Similarly, Prince has received a significant streaming boost, as his tracks ‘When Doves Cry’ and ‘Purple Rain’ appeared throughout the final episode of Stranger Things.

The Netflix series has had a close relationship with 80s music throughout its run. In 2022, the series would gift Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ a re-introduction to the global charts in 2022 after multiple appearances throughout its fourth season.

Ross Duffer would also tell Tudum that they “never talked about a song choice as much as we did” regarding which song would serve as the trigger for the bomb that would close the bridge between the Upside Down and the real world. “We knew we needed an epic needle drop, and so many ideas were thrown around. I think there’s nothing really more epic than Prince.” According to Ross, side two of Purple Rain “lined up perfectly for us.”

Stranger Things season 5 is available to stream in its entirety on Netflix.
