Deftones have kicked off their Australian tour with something equal parts unexpected and on brand, a deep cut live debut and a limited edition donut tied to their latest record.
The band launched their run down under on Saturday night (May 2nd) show in Sydney, where they played ‘Departing The Body’ live for the first time, the track closes out their most recent album ‘private music’, and its arrival on stage feels like a signal that this era is still unfolding in real time.
It’s not exactly the obvious crowd pleaser, but Deftones have never been about playing it safe.
‘Milk Of The Madonna’ goes edible
At the same time, the band have leaned into something a little stranger, Melbourne’s Hector’s Bakery & Kiosk has teamed up with Deftones to create an officially endorsed ‘Milk Of The Madonna’ donut, named after the second single from ‘private music’.
It’s a tres leches-inspired creation, and like most good tour gimmicks, it won’t stick around long, the donut is only available today through until May 10th, giving fans a short window to get involved before it disappears.
Merch tables are one thing, pastry collaborations are another.
A tour that’s still unfolding
Deftones are currently touring Australia with Interpol and Ecca Vandal, working through arena dates before wrapping things up across the Tasman.
The setlist shift, paired with the offbeat promo moves, suggests a band still actively shaping how this album lives outside the studio, dropping a closing track into the set this early isn’t accidental, it’s a statement.
And honestly, it hits harder than another predictable encore.
