Drain packs the heavy with emotion as they dedicate their second single to their Drummer’s battle with cancer.
Santa Cruz hardcore icons Drain just dropped their second single, ‘Stealing Happiness From Tomorrow’, in anticipation of their third album …Is Your Friend, releasing later this year. They’ve also released a tour footage music video dedicated to their drummer Tim Flegal, who’s had to sit out a number of shows to undergo cancer treatment.
Drain is a band known for stirring their high-energy performances and ability to stir the crowd up into a frenzy. This reputation has led the band to become festival staples and even secured them a spot supporting Blink-182 in last years tour.
That’s why the video and Flegal’s absence from the recent tour hits hard. The video opens with a dedication to Flegal, noting that in the 11 years since starting the band, he had never missed a single practice, show or tour. However, due to his ongoing battle with cancer, he’s had to miss this current leg of touring.
‘Stealing Happiness From Tomorrow’ itself is a heavy-hitting anthem about accomplishing your dreams with friends. Against the backdrop of Flegal’s absence, the song’s message hits hard, but the video delivers the final blow.
The video highlights Drain’s touring life, and it’s hard to deny it looks like a killer good time. At times, a cardboard cutout of Flegal appears in the video, still joining them for their various hijinks.
As for the track itself, despite its sentimental and touching background, the song is anything but. It’s a groovy, breakdown-filled jam laden with evil riffs that’ll have you forming a pit in your own home.
Drain’s third record …Is Your Friend, releases November 7th via Epitaph Records. You can check out their previous single ‘Nights Like These’ here.
