Wright, actor and producer Noah Centineo, and filmmaker Sophie Hyde have been added to the 2025 SXSW line up.
SXSW Sydney have announced three new and pretty exciting additions to the screen arm of the festival’s 2025 edition, which kicks off on October 13.
The Running Man will, er, run into South By South West Sydney later this month, with the news that director Edgar Wright will present an early look at the upcoming sci-fi thriller. The Shaun Of The Dead director will be beaming in for a special in conversation event with stuntman and director Nash Edgerton (Mr Inbetween).
This will be our first good look at The Running Man, the second adaptation of Stephen King‘s remarkably grim novel (he published it under his Richard Bachman pseudonym, and they’re all pretty bleak). Unlike the 1987 version, which starred a peak era Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wright’s take promises to be closer to the source material. Glen Powell stars as downtrodden Ben Richards, who leaps at the chance to save his sickly daughter by competing in the titular gameshow, a bloody death sport and the most popular entertainment in the film’s dystopian near future. Josh Brolin, William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, and Colman Domingo co-star.
Also new to the SXSW Sydney roster is producer and actor Noah Centineo, who will be on hand for the Australian premiere of black comedy Our Hero, Balthazar on Tuesday, October 14 at Palace Central Cinemas.
A black comedy about America’s gun culture, Our Hero, Balthazar stars Jaeden Martell as Balthazar “Balthy” Malone, a gun control slacktivist who travels to Texas to confront an online troll (Asa Butterfield) who says he’s planning a school shooting, with neither prepared for what will eventuate when they finally cross paths.
The film is produced by Noah Centineo’s Arkhum Productions, with Centineo also having a role.
Finally, Animals and Jimpa director Sophie Hyde will join the popular Screen Breakfast networking event on Tuesday 14th October to discuss her work and approach to filmmaking.
The SXSW Sydney Screen Festival runs October 13-19, 2025 at venues across the city. For full info and ticketing, hit up the official site.
The Running Man hits cinemas on November 13, 2025.
