Sydney’s underground metal scene has a new name crawling out of the dirt.
Evilean, the death metal project led by musician Jojo, has released its debut single ‘Lost Cause’, alongside an official music video that introduces the project’s raw and hostile sound.
Released last Friday (March 6th), the track marks the first glimpse of the upcoming EP ‘Exhumation Evilean’ and positions the Sydney based artist as a new voice in Australia’s extreme metal landscape.
Evilean is Jojo’s vision, handling vocals, guitar, and songwriting and building a project rooted in the brutality and atmosphere of classic death metal while bringing a female led presence into a space that has historically been dominated by men.
Old School Death Metal With A Modern Bite
Evilean leans heavily into the DNA of 1990s death metal, the sound is stripped back and aggressive, favouring raw intensity over polished production. The project’s themes dive into violence, power, and retribution, channelling the darker storytelling that helped shape the genre’s early underground era, Jojo describes the music as direct and uncompromising, built to capture death metal in its most hostile form.
Instead of chasing trends or modern metal gloss, Evilean deliberately leans into the grit, the aim is to evoke a time when death metal was dangerous, abrasive, and unapologetically underground.
The Musicians Behind The EP
While Evilean is driven by Jojo’s songwriting, the upcoming ‘Exhumation Evilean’ EP also features contributions from respected names in the metal world.
Drums were handled by Robin Stone, known for his work across extreme metal projects, while Jim Ramses recorded the bass parts.
Together, the trio helped bring the project’s debut recordings to life with a sound that leans heavily into the genre’s classic brutality.
