Fallout 5 Is Reportedly “Fully Greenlit” & Could Be Helmed By Elder Scrolls Studio

Fallout 5 could be heading into active development, per new information – however, details are still sparse.

The Fallout series is one of gaming’s most celebrated and successful IP‘s to date. Plus, with the added smash hit of a mainstream TV series, it’s a no brainer that we can expect another game in the future.

However, recent information suggests that Bethesda may only just be starting work on a follow-up to 2015’s Fallout 4.

This information comes from Jez Corden, the Windows Central executive editor. Corden joined the Xbox Two Podcast and discussed how Xbox were allegedly handling the Fallout franchise moving forward. Recently, Xbox had issued a number of layoffs across its many studios and cancelled a handful of projects, allocating resources elsewhere.

One such studio was ZeniMax, who was working on an unannounced MMO codenamed Blackbird. As a result, Corden states he’s heard the studio might be pivoting to work on the next Fallout game.

“From what I heard, it was a case of ‘Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this [project Blackbird] to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?'” Corden said.

However, Corden himself admits that he doesn’t have enough information to write a full story about an upcoming Fallout 5, or which studio may be developing it. For all we know, this could indicate that ZeniMax is only being reshuffled onto to different existing projects, similar to Bioware after releasing Dragon Age: The Veilguard last year.

Given the success of the series and the large gap between titles, it’d be very surprising if a Fallout 5 wasn’t already in development. Fallout 4 similarly had a tight lid for most of its development. It wasn’t until January 2013 where info started to leak on Reddit about certain plot details, and that Bethesda had been scouting around in Boston.

In the 10 years since the previous game, we’ve had Fallout: 76, an online live-service Fallout game release to mixed reviews in 2018. To its credit, the game has been releasing new content regularly, and seems to be receiving positive reviews. Amazon Prime has also released a critically acclaimed Fallout series, with a second season dropping in December this year. Needless to say, there’s been plenty of Fallout content available to fans keeping them satiated inbetween major titles.

The only argument against another Fallout game being worked on is that Bethesda has its plate full with other titles. The studio has confirmed they’re working on the next big DLC for Starfield, and all hands are on deck for an Elder Scrolls: VI.

Either way, as always, it’s best to take any information surrounding leaks with a grain of salt until you officially hear it from the studio itself. If you are hungry for some new Fallout, maybe try Fallout: 76, or start a new save in Fallout 4 and fill it to the brim with mods for a fresh experience.
