Justin Lin, the director behind multiple Fast & Furious films, has been tapped to helm the upcoming video game adaptation of Helldivers.
Fans of the Helldivers games are in for a treat, as its official live-action adaptation has tapped Fast & Furious director Justin Lin to helm the film.
The Hollywood Reporter would break the story today, revealing that Lin will also produce the film via his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner, along with Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
Gary Dauberman, who wrote the scripts for It and Annabelle, has also penned the screenplay for the upcoming project. Dauberman was also a co-writer for the recent Until Dawn film, which took some major departures from the original game.
Despite Dauberman’s involvement potentially raising some eyebrows among fans, Lin’s involvement is a good sign that the project is receiving a lot of love from Sony‘s end.
The director has previously worked on other big-budget films such as The Fast And Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious 4, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, and F9: The Fast Saga. He’s also shown off his sci-fi chops, having directed J.J. Abrams-produced film Star Trek: Beyond.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lin himself has said he isn’t a gamer, but used that fact to his advantage when pitching his take on Helldivers to Sony and PlayStation. The director revealed he wanted to focus on the characters’ humanity and feature a “timely” story, while building what could become a future franchise for the studio.
Given that the game itself goes to great lengths to show the expendability of the Helldivers, this could be an interesting take.
In the first four months of its launch in 2024, Helldivers 2 had reportedly sold more than 12 million units across the PS5 and PC. The game would finally make its way onto Xbox consoles earlier this year, alongside a variety of updates to the game, adding new enemies and mission types to keep players coming back.
Helldivers isn’t the only video game adaptation Sony is working on at the moment, as well. The studio has also shared plans for a God of War Amazon series and a Horizon: Zero Dawn movie adaptation, plus a Ghost of Tsushima anime-spin off.
HBO’s Last of Us is also expected to film its third season sometime next year, continuing that long list of video game adaptations coming our way.
