Seth Rogen’s gaggle of anthropomorphic snacks are back for more relentlessly raunchy fun.
Sausage Party was a fun time when it dropped back in 2016. A Pixar-lookin’ CGI animated affair that applied the bluer-than-blue sensibilities of regular collaborators Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Kyle Hunter,
and Ariel Shaffir to a universe of anthropomorphic food, it was a decent box office hit. It was also a pretty savage satire of blind faith and organised religion – can’t see a major studio being so bold in our current grim moment.
But Sausage Party was a sizable enough earner to spawn a streaming series on Amazon Prime Video: Sausage Party: Foodtopia. Which was little loved (46% on Rotten Tomatoes – brutal) but perhaps loved just enough to warrant a second season. And here she comes.
Sausage Party: Foodtopia Season 2 Trailer
What’s the plot?
After the apocalyptic events of last season, which saw the deaths of Kristen Wiig’s Brenda Bunson (a hotdog bun) and David Krumholz’s Kareem Abdul-Lavash (a lavash), our heroes Frank Frankfurter, Barry, Sammy, and Jack head off to find a new sanctuary. They find it in New Foodland, a utopia run by food where humans have been domesticated (don’t ask how). Sounds perfect! Of course, something hinky is going on under the surface…
Who’s in it?
- Seth Rogen as Frank Frankfurter, a sausage.
- Michael Cera as Barry, a little munted sausage.
- Edward Norton as Sammy Bagel Jr., which is fairly self-explantory.
- Will Forte as Jack, a surviving human, friend, and reluctant cannibal.
- Sam Richardson as the authoritarian orange, Julius.
- Yassir Lester as Iced Tea, which is again pretty clear.
New to the cast this season are Marion Cotillard, Martin Starr, Jillian Bell, Melissa Villaseñor, Andre Braugher, Haley Joel Osment, Jay Pharoah, Miles Fisher, and Patti Harrison.
When’s it out?
Sausage Party: Foodtopia Season 2 hits Amazon Prime Video on August 13.
What’s the vibe?
To be totally honest, I didn’t hate the first season, but I’ve memory-holed 90% of it. So, maybe file this one under “passable timewaster”, and we all need one of those now and again.
