There is no greater gift that the 2010’s have given us than the melding of rap with emo (an overstatement or understatement depending on how passionate you are about Soundcloud rap). Pioneer GARZI, who writes what he defines as “alternative 808s” music, continues to champion the convergence between our Warped Tour-built scene and the hip hop/RnB genre.
The ongoing plight continues today with his release of the visuals for ‘SICK OF ME’, a co-write with Blink-182’s revered drummer Travis Barker and Goldfinger’s John Feldmann. While Barker assumes his role on the kit, Feldmann’s fingerprints are all over the track, with the legendary collaborator having produced it as part of GARZI’s recent EP. Feldmann is renowned for his work with The Used, Blink-182, All Time Low, Panic! At The Disco and pretty much every other band you’ve ever truly loved, including The Veronicas. GARZI describes Feldmann’s spirit as “kindred” to his own, while Barker occupies the spot of a lifelong hero.
“It was crazy to have Travis drumming on the song”, he adds. Like most of us, he props up Blink-182 as one of his inspirations “since childhood.” On transcending the archaic and traditional concept of ‘genre’, he deftly articulates his hope that “people can stop trying to classify music and just enjoy it…use these songs to get them through any tough situation they may be going through.”
‘SICK OF ME’ is taken as a single from GARZI’s extended play STUCK IN THE MIDDLE, which dropped in May on Feldmann’s very own label, Big Noise. Usually anything that Feldmann touches turns to gold, and this is no exception. GARZI describes STUCK IN THE MIDDLE as in “an entirely different world” from his previous musical output, but reasons that that’s “what makes creating music fun.”
