Gerard Way expects fewer shows while MCR work on new music, although he hasn’t ruled out a rust-shaking appearance under another name.
My Chemical Romance have a new album in their sights, with Gerard Way pencilling in 2027 for a return to the studio.
“Next year we wanna make a record,” he told fans during MCR’s 30 October show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, in audience footage shared by @_juliabog.
The crowd’s cheers gave him a moment before he delivered the catch: “We’re probably not going to do any shows”.
Way had already raised the idea at San Antonio’s Alamodome on 12 September. According to Consequence’s account, he wanted to make more songs after their 2022 single ‘The Foundations Of Decay’.
A new studio album would follow 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys. Way hasn’t announced a release date, but fans now have a clearer idea of when MCR want to record it.
As for staying offstage, he left himself a little room. If the band get rusty while recording, Way joked, they could call themselves ‘Helena’ and turn up for a show.
He also expressed hope of seeing fans again in 2028, without announcing a tour.
My Chemical Romance Reunite Onstage With Bert McCracken
There was plenty to keep the Hollywood Bowl crowd occupied in the meantime. MCR performed the Danger Days bonus track ‘We Don’t Need Another Song About California’, which ThePRP reports was a live debut.
The Used’s opening slot also became a two-way exchange. Way joined them for ‘Buried Myself Alive’, before Bert McCracken returned the favour during MCR’s ‘You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison’.
ThePRP reports that both collaborations marked their first performances of those songs together since 2005, with audience recordings capturing each appearance.
The recording plans come as MCR’s anniversary campaign continues. As BLUNT reported this morning, the expanded edition of The Black Parade has delivered the band’s first UK No.1 album.
They still have shows to play before turning the calendar over. MCR’s official itinerary lists November dates across Asia, running through Jakarta on 22 November.
