Giancarlo Esposito headlines new Far Cry 6 trailer

After details leaked about a new Far Cry game late last week, Ubisoft have come out with an official trailer for Far Cry 6 at their Ubisoft Forward digital conference. While the cinematic trailer doesn’t feature any gameplay, it does give us a glimpse of new bad guy Anton Castillo, played by Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul actor Giancarlo Esposito.

The detailed four-minute clip shows a touching moment between Castillo, the president of fictional island Yara (loosely based on Cuba), and his son, who he hands a live grenade. Leading him up onto the roof of their lavish home as protestors riot below, Castillo explains to his son, who is set to takeover from him, how they must rule with an iron fist to keep the people under control. Using the grenade as a metaphor he tells his son, ‘Our country is like this grenade, except it has two basic parts: the people, and you – and you must clutch them nice and tight. Or we all go boom!’ Heavy stuff.

The plot of Far Cry 6 revolves around the player controlled Dani Rojas, whose mission is to take down Castillo and his evil regime. Similar to Far Cry 5 and Far Cry New Dawn, you will be able to play as either a male or female and customise your character to your heart’s desire. The game will be the biggest yet and includes a wide variety of weapons and the ability to recruit allies to fight alongside you, including a ‘dangerously distracting wiener dog’ named Chorizo.

While the trailer doesn’t shed any light on the gameplay, the introduction of Esposito as main villain Castillo is a masterstroke, and visually, it looks like another impressive entry from the long running franchise.

Far Cry 6 is set for release February 18, 2021, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia.
