GWAR front-creature Blothar is taking the US government’s latest stunt very seriously.
In a new video, the blood-spraying alien bassist slammed the proposed $1.1 billion gutting of public media, calling on fans to step up and shut it down before it’s too late.
The cuts come via an executive order signed by Donald Trump, aimed at choking off federal funding for NPR and PBS. The usual rhetoric followed claims of “bias” and “unfair coverage” but it’s not just political posturing. If passed, it would leave huge swathes of the country with nothing but static and reruns, killing off stations that serve rural communities, Native populations, and anyone still clinging to a bit of sanity in the media swamp.
Blothar also doesn’t mince words. “Public media is in danger,” he says, mid-apocalypse as usual. He throws back to Fred Rogers, who famously saved NPR funding once before by testifying in Congress. “Mr. Rogers brought love and light into a dark and hateful world,” he growls. “Now that’s on the chopping block.”
He lays it out plain. If this bill goes through, it’s not just kids’ shows or news coverage that gets silenced. It’s actually a whole lot of things. Art, music, access. I mean, whole stations will vanish. Licensing fees won’t get paid. Local culture gets tossed into the fire because someone didn’t like a headline.
Then he raises the horns. “Rise up, people. In the name of Fred Rogers. In the name of Big Bird. In the drunken Lady Elaine Fairchild.” If you thought this fight wasn’t for you, congratulations, it is now.
The Senate is set to vote on the Rescissions Act this week. Blothar wants you to crash their inboxes, jam the phone lines, and raise hell at protectmypublicmedia.org. Because this isn’t just about keeping your favorite show on the air. It’s about not letting censorship sneak in.
His final words were: “Call your senators. Make a difference. Do it now. There’s not a lot of time.” And he’s right to be fair, there isn’t.
