The Mexican master of the macabre is finally realising his dream project for Netflix.
It’s alive! After years of development and false starts, Hellboy and The Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro‘s long-gestating adaptation of Frankenstein is due on Netflix later this year. And at Netflix’s annual back-patting party Tudum, we finally got to see some footage in the form of a brand spankin’ new teaser.
Frankenstein Trailer
What’s the plot?
Really? Righto.
Based on the 1816 novel by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein tells the tale of the driven, brilliant young scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who attempts to create life by jury-rigging together a body from corpse parts. Good news: it works! Bad news: horrified by his creation, Victor abandons the nameless brute, which, on reflection, was a remarkably poor choice.
Look, it’s based on one of the greatest novels in the English language, which has already inspired countless adaptations, homages, and parodies. If you’re not across it already, that’s a you problem.
Who’s in it?
- Oscar Isaac is driven scientist Victor Frankenstein, with Christian Convery as the young Victor.
- Jacob Elordi is Frankenstein’s monster.
- Mia Goth is Elizabeth Lavenza, Victor’s fiancée.
- Christoph Waltz is Harlander.
- Felix Kammerer is William Frankenstein, Victor’s younger brother.
- Lars Mikkelsen is Captain Anderson.
- David Bradley is the blind hermit who shows kindness to the monster.
- Ralph Ineson is Professor Krempe, professor of natural philosophy and Victor’s mentor.
- Charles Dance is in the mix too, although his role has yet to be announced.
When’s it out?
Frankenstein hits Netflix in November, 2025, with an exact date yet to be determined. Hopefully we’ll get at least a limited theatrical run, too.
What’s the vibe?
Simply could not be more excited. Del Toro is modern cinema’s premiere fantasist, and Frankenstein has been a dream project of his for ages. This one is a must see for horror fans, spooky kids, and cineastes alike. And if you’re all three, like your humble correspondent, you’ll be levitating with anticipation.
