Holding Absence Return With ‘Whisper Of A Dream’

Share

Holding Absence are back in motion, returning with ‘Whisper Of A Dream’, their first new music since 2023’s ‘The Noble Art Of Self-Destruction’ and the first release under Sumerian Records.

After stepping away following their last record, Holding Absence haven’t come back quietly, this track feels like a reset, not a clean slate, but something more reflective. A band picking through what’s left after burning everything down.

A heavier emotional pull beneath the surface

‘Whisper Of A Dream’ leans into the space Holding Absence have always owned, emotional, vulnerable, but now threaded with something colder, there’s a tension running through it. The push between numbness and wanting to feel something again, frontman Lucas Woodland frames it as both a return and a shift (per press release).

“Whisper Of A Dream is our first song back in what feels like forever. After releasing our third record, The Noble Art Of Self-Destruction, it felt essential to step away for a while – to take stock and rediscover who we are as a band.”

That pause shows, the track doesn’t rush, it sits in its own weight, exploring the edges of identity and what’s left when hope starts slipping out of reach.

A new world, a new character

Lyrically, the band are pulling from cyberpunk themes, exploring ideas of consciousness, dreaming, and what it means to exist in a shifting world.

“Whisper felt like the perfect song to return with. In many ways, it represents everything Holding Absence has always been, while introducing new elements to our sound and opening the door to what comes next.”

The accompanying video introduces ‘Y4-BB0’, a robotic figure set to play a bigger role across the band’s next chapter, it’s a clear signal this isn’t just a one-off single. There’s a wider concept taking shape behind it.

Rebuilding after ‘The Noble Art Of Self-Destruction’

Closing their last album with a stark ‘3/3’, Holding Absence made it clear that era was done, fully closed with no loose ends.

What follows now feels like the aftermath, a band asking what survives the collapse and what needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

Where Holding Absence go next

Signing with Sumerian Records marks a new phase, and ‘Whisper Of A Dream’ is the first glimpse into it, it doesn’t scream reinvention, but it does shift the tone.

Holding Absence haven’t lost what made them connect, they’ve just pulled it into a darker, more controlled space.

If this is the starting point, whatever comes next isn’t going to play it safe.
